Art is Ed Tuttle’s passion. The Southington illustrator of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, whose book was the inspiration for the Southington Library’s Fall Family Reading Program, There Was a Fine Town That Swallowed a Book, will share his artistic passion with children ages 8-12 at his program, Draw Like a Pro. The program will be held on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4th at 10:30 a.m. Vote for the Arts by registering for Draw Like a Pro in person at the library.

Cold weather will be here before you know it. Be a good neighbor to your backyard’s inhabitants and treat your fine feathered friends to a delicious and nutritious citrus snack from a decorative birdfeeder. Children ages 7-12 will experience flight from a bird’s eye view in an iPad app and create a wire birdfeeder at the For the Birds edition of MakerLab on Tuesday, October 28th at 6:30 p.m. In person registration is required. Come to the Pet Parade!

Show your pet pride at our Pet Parade on Saturday, September 27th at 2:00 p.m. (Rain date: Saturday, October 4th at 2:00 p.m.). Children and their favorite pet pals (live or stuffed) are invited to march with their animal amigos, claim a pet prize, make an animal-themed craft, and create an Oreo spider. Refreshments will also be provided for adults. In person registration is required. The Pet Parade is part of the library’s There Was a Fine Town That Swallowed a Book reading program. What can you do this summer to have fun while making sure that your child retains the skills he or she has learned during the school year? Join the Summer Reading Program. Research shows that children who participate in a library Summer Reading Program are better prepared to learn in the fall. Children who are residents of Southington are eligible to join Summer Reading. Once they join, children may register to attend programming, participate in trivia contests, and new this summer, all children who report their summer reading may enter a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. One Kindle Fire will be awarded for the Children’s Summer Reading Program and one for the Tween Summer Reading Program.

This year’s event will kick off with the music, gymnastics and martial arts prowess of Ginga Brasileira. Children may register to take a ride on the Roaming Railroad, take part in Edison’s Workshop, test out their vocal ability with a Frozen Sing-along, paint a mural in the Children’s Playroom, visit with Nature Nick’s animals, attend a playdate and so much more.

Tweens who join Summer Reading will once again receive a free book from the Southington Middle School Summer Reading List. They also have the chance to create their own Rube Goldberg or mousetrap machine.

Registration begins June 4th and continues throughout the summer. Stop by the Children’s Services Desk to join and receive a calendar of events.

Heroes Assemble! Come celebrate Free Comic Book Day with a BANG at the Library on Saturday, May 3rd! Stop by the Southington Public Library from 2-4p.m to play some awesome games, test your Hero abilities, snag a free comic book, and take a picture or two with our special superhero guests—including Iron Man, SuperGirl, and many others! A Night of Family Magic

See the show audiences are calling “Superb!”, “A blast!”, and “Heartwarming fun for the whole family.” Join magician and juggler Scott Jameson for an extraordinary performance of A Night of Family Magic at the Southington Library on Tuesday, April 8th at 6:30 p.m. The show will have you laughing out loud and perched on the very edge of your seat.

Umbrellas will be plucked from thin air, a drawing will come to life, basketballs will be spun and juggled, and the audience will travel through time. Don’t miss it! If you have a child in 3rd grade through age 12 with a flair for the dramatic, come to the Southington Library and register for the Library’s Theater Games programs on Mondays, January 6th and/or 13th at 4:00 p.m.

An audition for this year’s children’s play will be held on Monday, January 27th at 4:00p.m.  In order to register to audition for the play, children must have attended at least one Theater Games class.  For more information, please contact the Children’s Department of the Southington Library at 860-628-0947 X3.

War Horse Puppetry Workshop

The Southington Public Library is pleased to announce the War Horse Puppetry Workshop on Saturday December 14th from 10:00a.m. – 12:00p.m.  This event, featuring teaching artist Dan Butterworth, is presented by The Bushnell and recommended for children ages 10+, although children ages 8 and 9 who are able to work independently may also register to attend.  Attendees will experience and learn about puppetry and create their own puppet. All participants will also be entered into a drawing to win four tickets to the January 28th performance of War Horse at the Bushnell.  In person registration is required for this event.

To ensure that every child experiences the joy of reading this holiday season, the Southington Library wants to give adult caregivers a book for each of their children with a valid Southington library card.  The book may be placed on the child’s bed, while they are sleeping, the night before their special day.  When they wake up, the child can open it immediately. Their first gift will be a positive reading experience.  Come to the Children’s Desk to request a free book.

Picture Book Theater Returns

The Picture Book Theater program returns to the Southington Library Thursday, September 26th. Young performers, ages five through seven, will meet together to learn acting skills and build their confidence through theater games. The program will conclude with a dramatic performance of a picture book.  Not only will your child have fun and increase their self-esteem, but drama activities also improve reading comprehension and verbal and non-verbal communication skills.  If you know a young child with a flair for the dramatic, Picture Book Theater may be the perfect program for them.  Classes take place on Thursdays from 4:00p.m.—4:45p.m.—September 26th, October 3rd, 10th, 17th, & 24th and Monday, October 28th with a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, October 30th from 4:00p.m.—5:00p.m. The performance will take place on Saturday, November 2nd at 11:00a.m.  In person registration begins Thursday, August 22, 2013. 

Last Day to Vote and Summer Reading Grand Finale

There is still time to register to attend the Summer Reading Grand Finale & Book Swap on Thursday, August 8th at 6:30PM.  Attendees will watch a circus performance, have their faces painted and enjoy a delicious water ice generously donated by Rita’s of Southington.  One lucky parent who attends the finale with their child will win an ereader.

Mr. Bear has been a well-loved fixture in the Children’s Department for years.  This summer we dressed him up in extra special traveling clothes, fitted him with his own fanny pack and flattened him. Children who are residents of Southington are eligible to join Summer Reading beginning Monday, June 3rd.  Once they join, children may register to attend programming, complete weekly trivia challenges, report their reading achievement and have the opportunity to vote in a contest.

Tween residents of Southington who join Summer Reading will receive a free book from the Southington Middle School Summer Reading List.  They also have the chance to create a stop motion film and to enter a drawing for an awesome prize.

In order to attend summer programming, children must be registered for the Summer Reading Program.  In addition, some programs require additional registration.  Please inquire at the Children’s Services Desk for further information.

Programs this summer include:

Magical Moments – Magic and comedy kick-off Summer Reading.

 

Make It Monday – Create a simple craft at the library each Monday.

 

Stop Motion Film – Kids ages 9-12 create a character on our 3D printer to be used in a stop motion film shot entirely on the iPad.

 

Theater Games – Children ages 8 and up will meet together to learn acting skills through games and skits.

 

Builders of the Future – All ages are invited to attend this creative block building program.  Children under the age of 5 must attend with an adult.

 

Movie Lunch Bunch – Children and their grown-ups will enjoy a movie and a pizza lunch.

 

Creature Teachers & Animal Embassy – These programs both feature an opportunity to learn about and see live animals.

 

Art Appetizers – Artistically interested children ages 7-10 get a chance to explore an array of iPad art apps.

 

Sleeping Beauty Ballet – Dancers tell the classic tale in the form of a ballet.

 

Tearable to Tear-rific – Children ages 9-12 make an upcycled craft.

 

I Spy Photography – Learn to take photographs like Walter Wick, the creator of the I Spy book series.

 

Grand Finale & Book Swap – This year’s finale features Circus Minimus, the one man circus in a suitcase.  Don’t forget to bring some gently used books to swap.

On the outskirts of town a building named Doolittle is the site of a hidden underground laboratory. Discover the secrets of the hidden lab, witness surprising discoveries, experience showers of smoke-filled bubbles and popping potions all created by the two coolest things in the world on Friday, Dec. 28th at 2:30p.m. at the Southington Library and Museum.  The Underground Lab Mystery program is for children ages 6+.  In person registration is required.

Come to the new Transmedia program and create your own stop motion animation film, with the technique used in the new movie, Frankenweenie.  In pairs of two, participants will learn how to create their own movie short on an iPad and discuss the book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Classes take place during Thanksgiving week, Monday & Tuesday November 19th and 20th from 6:30-8:00p.m. and Friday, November 23rd from 1:30-4:30p.m.  Friends and family are invited to the film screening on Saturday, November 24th at 11:00a.m. Registration required. Ages 9-12.

New – Read 2 Rover

Listening dogs offer a way of accepting without judgment.  Children who are in need of reading practice or unsure about reading out loud and are comfortable with dogs, may sign up for a 15 minute private session of Read 2 Rover at the Southington Library on Thursday, October 4, 11 or 25 at 7:00p.m., 7:20p.m. or 7:40p.m.  Only one session per month, per child is allowed.  In person registration is required.

Bring your freshly laundered Halloween costumes to the Children’s Department at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18th for the second annual Halloween Costume Swap.

There is still time to register to attend the Summer Reading Grand Finale on Thursday, August 9th at 6:30PM.  One lucky parent who attends the finale with their child will win an ereader.

There’s Still Time to Register For Summer Reading!

It was so nice to see everyone having such a great time at our Summer Reading Kickoff with Jester Jim.  But, even if you missed last night’s performance you can still register your child for Summer Reading.  Once registered, your child may attend programming and have their photo taken with Lightning McQueen, Cinderella or Harry Potter and Hermione.  Upon registration, children entering grades six, seven or eight receive a free book from the Town of Southington’s Summer Reading List. Summer Reading 2012

Summer Fun awaits you in the Children’s Department of the Southington Library & Museum.  Beginning June 1st and continuing throughout the summer, Southington residents may register their children for Summer Reading and gain access to programming, participate in trivia contests, vote for a toy for the Children’s Department to donate to a local charity and more.

This year our Summer Reading Theme is Technokids.  There’ll be something new to see or do almost every day during Summer Reading.  Once your child has joined Summer Reading, you may register your child to attend all of our summer programming.  Our Summer Reading Kick-off takes place on Wednesday, June 27th and features the hilarious Jester Jim.  Also this summer, children may ride the Roaming Railroad, follow the Yellowbrick road to see the Wizard of Oz, prepare to catch some fireflies during Flashes of Light, see the fabulous tricks performed by the Marvelous Mutts and so much more. For those looking for drop-in programming, we offer Movement Class, Builders of the Future, Bingo and Make It Monday.

The book swap will return to this year’s Grand Finale. Children can trade their gently used books for others they haven’t yet read.  Bring some books and a bag and join the fun.  New to our finale this year will be a photo booth where you can capture some summer memories that will last a lifetime.

We haven’t forgotten the parents who patiently drive their children to summer events and help them with their reading.  Once again this year, parents attending the Grand Finale with their children may enter to win a new ereader.

Southington Middle School students who register for our Tween Summer Reading Program receive a free book from the Town of Southington’s Middle School Summer Reading List and a chance to win an ereader.  They can also take a Titanic Adventure, enter trivia contests and vote to choose a toy to donate to charity.

    this sounds like fun! even though reading is not my favorite thing in the world i still love it. sometimes i wil think a book is horrorable and sometimes ill think its a wonderful, loving, juice, and amazing!!! keep reading it helps you through alot of things in your life!! keep on reading every one!!! ;p
